MY SYMBOL: A Hat Full of Memory, Loss, and Heritage.
Ovid hernandez. For my cultural object, I chose a hat. To most people, a hat is just something you wear, but for me it carries a much deeper meaning. In 2021, my grandfather in the Dominican Republic got COVID and had to be hospitalized. While he was fighting the illness, I bought a hat to give him when he recovered and came home. I imagined him wearing it the way he always did, with pride and style. But he never made it out of the hospital. He passed away before I could give it to him. Because of that, the hat became a symbol of him of the love I…

cultural object – ethnographic class
For my cultural object, I chose a reusable water bottle. Before you start wondering why in the world I would choose a reusable water bottle as my cultural object, I would like to mention that I carry a reusable water bottle daily to school, the gym, or just whenever I am outside. It is a part of my routine since I fill the bottle up with water so frequently. I believe the bottle connects to a sense of control and discipline. I know that if I do not get the right water intake for the day, I will feel low-energized and dehydrated, and when I use it consistently, I feel…

Week 5
In week 5 of English Comp, the class read a haunted house based story which signified a deep meaning behind it. In the beginning, the scary details made it seem like it was an ordinary haunted story, but after a close examination, we realized that there was some relationship issues in the story. The story shared different emotions and connected horror to those different emotions in a subtle way, which I found impressive and quite interesting. I felt one of those emotions was mistrust, especially in relationships. We also worked on a timeline of our lives in class, marking the important parts of our lives which shaped us, it was…

Week 6
In week 6’s English Comp class, we saw the film How to Survive a Plague, which was a documentary discussing the impact that the AIDS crisis left on its people affected and their fight on getting government officials to do something about it and release a cure quickly. Many people in the LGBTQ+ community felt as if the people in charge of the FDA gave them little importance and were not doing enough to combat the spreading deadly virus. One artifact from the video that stood out to me was how the video did not go super into AIDS, but showed and put emphasis on the way that the Aids…

ENGL 202-Symbol Writing
Something that I believe represents outside of itself is Crows. Crows aren’t just animals to some people, they are creatures of the otherworld, and are portents of Death. Crows have been depicted as symbols of death for a long time, dating way back to the 16th century. In my opinion I believe this suits them very well just as a Dove represents life and Purity, so in a way they kind of go hand in hand and are 2 different sides of the same coin. But then again I believe that Crows don’t deserve to be outcasted like this as they are very intelligent creatures and are often underestimated by…

In English Composition 2 week 6, we focused on different ideas for our autobiographies and thinking about the most effective way to present them while preserving their emotional impact. I’ve already brainstormed my main ideas, but now I’m working on organizing them into a strong written format.
also studied how activists and people living with AIDS protested for access to treatment during a time when the government did not treat the crisis with urgency. Many life-saving medications were either delayed or priced so high that people couldn’t afford them, which led some to obtain the drugs illegally. Groups like ACT UP formed to demand equality for AIDS patients and push for the release of necessary treatments to help prevent further deaths in our ethnography class , we learned more about auto-ethnography

week 6
In composition, we watched the plague and also had time to find the genre we want to write about in our autobiography. For my ethnographic class we did a survey, and it was a lot of questions that I feel like were the same thing the whole time.

Bryant’s Park Photos
I wanted to take photo la of Bryant’s park as I enjoy coming to this park to relax or chill after school or in between breaks from classes. Ever since I’ve been coming to guttman cc, Bryant’s park has been one of the spots that makes me feel so zen and at ease. 1st Photo: This carousel is where all the kids go to with their parents to enjoy their time at the park on sunny days to have fun, I used to go on carousels alot when I was younger with my parents and in a way this hits home. 2nd Photo: For those that don’t know, this is…

blog #6
This week for English composition 2, we were brainstorming ideas for our autobiography and the way we want to present our autobiography while keeping the same emotional value. I have already brainstormed my ideas. I just need to figure out the best way to present it on paper. We also learned how activist and people with AIDS were protesting and demanding treatment that the government was not releasing because they did not see it as a major issue to be dealt with causing many to die. If medication/treatment were being released, it was at an expensive cost that could not be afforded by many so instead people were illegally acquiring…
