Week 6
In week 6’s English Comp class, we saw the film How to Survive a Plague, which was a documentary discussing the impact that the AIDS crisis left on its people affected and their fight on getting government officials to do something about it and release a cure quickly. Many people in the LGBTQ+ community felt as if the people in charge of the FDA gave them little importance and were not doing enough to combat the spreading deadly virus. One artifact from the video that stood out to me was how the video did not go super into AIDS, but showed and put emphasis on the way that the Aids impacted the people and their struggles first. A major part of the documentary was the ACT UP, which were a group of protestors who demanded faster research and better medication from government officials. Not only did they educate themselves and challenge research institutes, they did not wait on anyone to do their dirty work for them, which showed me a valuable lesson. If you want to achieve something in life, it is up to your merit and dedication in order for that thing to be achieved. Overall, the documentary was great, and I would recommend anyone to watch it if they want an in-depth view on the AIDS crisis in the 80s. In Ethnographic, we continued working on our mapping projects and also completed a school survey which did not take too long.
