Navigating Peer Obstructions

Summary

This poem discusses how unfair the academic, social, and neurotypical-dominant world is to me as an Autistic and LGBTQ+ person. The intention of my poem is to challenge societal structures and culturally reform traditions which disenfranchise those who come from minority backgrounds.

Navigating peer obstructions
And being quirky
Means making people assume
That I’m less capable
Navigating peer obstructions
While being in queer spaces
Along with my cognitive differences
Means being seen as not queer enough
Navigating peer obstructions
While attending clubs and events
Can potentially make me feel drained
Since clubs rely on neuronormative gathering methods
Navigating peer obstructions
And my peers being better in anthropology
Means letting me struggle in Cultural Anthropology
Due to not receiving adequate support
Navigating peer obstructions
And professors siding with them
Means feeling unworthy on campus
Being seen as less credible
Navigating peer obstructions
Struggling in a degree-normative society
Suffering every time my exams and grades lower down
Tells me to reform the entire CUNY system
Navigating peer obstructions
While dealing with all these shitty norms
Means staying resilient
But exposing negativity to create positivity
Navigating peer obstructions
As I speak with Guttman’s President
Advocating for a better system
Means making college welcoming for all abilities
