In this week’s English Composition classes, we analyzed poems that related to the subject alive at the end of the world. The poem my group and I analyzed was “Alive at the End of the World”. In the poem, it was set at an LGBTQ+ nightclub, and the comfort of being at the nightclub brought you. Afterwards, it changes to not feeling heard, and how people outside the nightclub viewed them with curiosity or hatred. My group related this to the idea alive at the end of the world by suggesting that people who want to expose their sexuality feel as though coming out is the end of the world because of the fear and prejudgments others have of LGBTQ+ communities. Being alive is being your authentic self and feeling freer after coming out. It was very interesting how the subject can be so different from just simply describing an apocalypse.
In Ethnographic Methods at Work, we learned the ways to observe a room. We can focus on the objects of the room or the people. Based on what we focused on, it can really change how we view a room or place. We discussed our future assignment of going to a park or beach in your neighborhood. We will have to observe people or things at the park. On the class map, we will be posting our observations. Most of the class pinned down the park where they will observe and will have to write a brief description of the park, such as when it was built, who it is named after, and what the park provides. It’s really interesting seeing our pins on a map. We can see how much we spread around the boroughs.
