Week II Reflection

In Composition, we read The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. The story follows the Montresor, a sickly individual who sought revenge against his old friend Fortunato for his countless betrayals. the story follows deception and manipulation as the Montresor lured his friend to his house and into the catacombs, where he proceeded to bury him alive and leave his body to rot for half a century. This story taught me about how deeply hatred and pain can corrupt one’s heart and further on, how deeply betrayal can impact someone. Seeing as it took the Montresor to murder to be able to feel some sort of relief after being constantly betrayed by his dear friend Fortunato. Continuing the concept of betrayal. In ethnography, we learned about the problem of sociology in minority culture and how this can also feel like a betrayal to those being studied. In the text read, we learnt about how white guilt connects to sociology and how it impacts how these cultures are viewed. These predominantly white sociologists, enter these communities of culture and judge without a deeper look. They perceive certain things like crimes, poverty, and behaviors without giving a second look to the cause. This is believed to be rooted from racism and white superiority. With white “culture” being perceived as societal norms, when cultures convey other types of behaviors it is interpreted and societal problems. Which can be perceived as a betrayal from the people who are meant to convey and better understand culture but are instead judging it. Overall, the topics discussed in both these classes correspond on the level that betrayal does not only come from one’s enemy but could come from a friend. or that new white neighbor down the block who tends to take notes from time to time.
