This week, I learned a little bit more about symbolism and hidden meanings in writing in English Composition II. For example, we were dealing with library databases and learning how to find sources that can provide us with relevant information to defend our arguments. We also completed an in-class symbol exercise where we were supposed to think about the symbolism of simple items. The dove seemed to be the most interesting option for me since it usually means peace. I started searching for sources that could prove this idea. Also, we spent a significant amount of time talking about the structure of our research essay including such aspects as scaffolding, MLA formatting, and signal phrases. I also put in some time to completing my research paper topic regarding zoos and animal abuse, however, apart from finding relevant sources, I understood that there was a need to select the best information presented in those sources and connect it to my argument.
Regarding the Ethnographic Methods at Work course, I gained several new pieces of information this week. Firstly, we explored unions and collective bargaining issues in depth. For example, I found out that a union is a type of organization that represents workers and fights for their interests. In addition, we considered collective action, protests, and how these phenomena can put pressure on institutions to make changes. As an illustration of these topics, we watched the movie Worker Control in Venezuela where workers took control of some factories and organized work together. The cooperation and responsibility required in the process caught my attention as workers were no longer forced to obey orders but worked together, communicated, organized tasks and supported each other.
